Morton Stanfield

In ninth grade we use to call ourselves the "3 ton's"  Chick Burton, Bill Johnston, and me, Morton.

"Chick" & I Shared  a lot of great times growing up on Joan Drive. I remember the "soon to be feared" Joan Drive Boys gang. Chick was maturing ahead of the rest of us & therefore was our leader. One summer eve. a little league team from North Bessemer had the AUDACITY  to use"OUR" Penn Jr. baseball field. Chick promptly confronted them and said they were not welcome. He challenged any one on the team to a fight in the green circle adjacent to the ballfield. Their coach sent out a much smaller & younger foe & I thought "this is not a fair fight." I was correct ! The fight lasted less than 10 sec. Chick's wounds eventually healed & he actually became good friends with Tim Timko . The "Joan Drive Boys" faded quickly as no one would accept the responsibilities that came with the job. Every time we met during our college years we had fun rehashing that experience.

I also remember the neighbors peeking out of their windows as Chick & I walked to Penn Jr. in our togas for the Latin Banquet.

We also had fun on trips to W.Va. in Chick's grandad's #50 Hudson.

                                            I love ya' Chick !!
