Owen Lewis (Lew) Clark

The most vivd memory that I have of Ron took place on a very hot August day in the summer of 1960.  I was "playing defense" when the offense ran a running play - a simple dive into the line - with Ron carrying the ball.  Shortly after he crossed the line of scrimmage and entered the defensive secondary I had the temerity to attempt to tackle our starting fullback.  I learned a serious lesson about football that day, one which I never, ever forgot.  If you are going to try to tackle someone who is shorter and heavier than you in the open field...make sure you get lower and closer to the ground than they are before attempting the tackle.  Ron knocked me right on my kiester.  What I remember next is the sight of Ron's black, high-topped football shoes as he continued on downfield past my prone body.  Like I said, I never made that mistake again.  Over the years I had the good fortune to run into Ron from time to time.  We maintained a cordial friendship and I will miss his warmth and dignity as I grew to know him better and better with the passing of time.  Rest in Peace, Ron.  You were one of Penn Hills 61's best.  Lew Clark.
