In Memory

Matthew Gregory

Matthew Gregory

Wanted to let you know that Matt passed away today, Sat. Jan. 16.  He had aortic valve replacement surgery on Wed. and while the operation was successful he had a terrible time the day after in ICU recovery.  Lots of pain.  He had a heart attack that night and a stroke.  We had him on life support from Thurs. night until this morning. We are in shock and his doctors are puzzled as they can't figure out exactly what happened.  People routinely survive this type of surgery. But it was not to be for my beloved husband.  I know you will put this on your PHHS web site.  He will be at English's funeral home in Oakmont Tues eve.  Wed afternoon and evening with the funeral onThurs. am.  Obit on their website and in Post Gazette.

I have nothing but fond memories of my time with Matthew. I can't think of PHHS without remembering the great time we had on the Track Team.  Even with Matthews passing those memories will continue.  God Bless

So sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I will always remember him as such a soft spoken, always smiling, classmate....not to mention what a great athlete he was! My sincere sympathy goes out to Lucy and his entire family.

Lucy, Sarah, and Emanuel,

As I sit here, in shock and sadness, I cannot believe Mathew is gone.  We knew each other from high school through the rest of our lives.  Matt was the physical education teacher and I taught first grade at Shenandoah Elementary in Penn Hills for over 30 years.  The children loved him; the teachers admired him.  He was everybody's friend, and a wonderful teacher.  At the end of each year he organized our outdoor Field Days as a fun activity and reward for the whole school.

After we teachers retired, Matt organized monthly Wednesday morning breakfasts at Eat 'N Park.  It was fun to see each other as we transitioned into later life.  Matt always had a smiley pancake, and maybe some fried potatoes.  Richard and I also saw Matt, Lucy, and Sarah at many Greek Food Festivals around Pittsburgh.  We (teachers, Richard and I) will miss him terribly.

Matt and Emanuel were the spark plugs for the Universal gang.  We played football, basketball, hockey, baseball and ran together.  We went to outdoor theatres together, with some of us sandwiched in the trunk of their car!  Matt pioneered year round training and certainly led the pack in cross-country.  In later years Matt was a regular on the mogul slopes of 7 Springs.  He will be sorely missed.

So sorry to hear about Matt Gregory, used to ride my bike all the way from my home(Universal Road) to his place, if I remember correctly right at Stotler road and Frankstown Road,  He was a fun guy never slowed down, we would play ball, and next thing, you would have 6 other kids show up and we would play until we dropped.  My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.  RIP Buddy!!

I loved Matthew and his brother and have fond memories of watching them run, run all year long and especially in the winter running 18 holes at the golf

courses in Penn Hills. My sympathy and prayers to his family as Matthew is now getting his reward and running in heavenly places.

Looking back across the years we all recall those who earned our utmost respect and admiration.  Matt and Emanuel, for many of us, were modest twin brothers of genuine character and fierce competitive spirit.

Matt is to be missed by friends and classmates near and far.  Counting on you, Emanuel, to help keep our life journeys and adventures going as Matt would insist.

My sincerest condolences to family and loved ones.

Knew Matt from track team in my senior year while throwing the javlin. He always had a smile and was a huge benefit to the PHHS track team, and what a runner he was.  My deepest sympathy and condolences to Lucy and family for your loss.
